A few years ago, I worked with a coach who loved Instagram. She showed up in Stories daily, hopped on trends just for fun, and openly shared about her burnout recovery. Within months, she was booking out her 1:1 spotsâwithout ads.
Then there was another client: a brilliant trauma-informed therapist with a crystal-clear offer. But showing up online felt like performing. Content creation was exhausting. She dreaded it. Her return? A few likes. Zero leads.
Both were incredibly skilled. Both had value to offer.
But their experience with social media? Completely different.
đŹ So hereâs the gentle but honest truth:
First, that was a couple years ago - and the algorithm has shifted and second, organic social media can workâbut only under the right conditions.
If you're only posting a few times a week and hoping to fill your client roster, the odds are... not in your favor.
Hereâs what we know in 2025:
Instagramâs organic reach hovers around 7.6% per post. That means if you have 1,000 followers, maybe 76 will see your content. (Addictive Digital)
Facebook is even lower, averaging 5.9% reach for organic posts. (AgencyAnalytics)
Engagement rates sit around 1â3%, and only a fraction of that becomes warm leads.
For most small brands:
đ 1â3 leads per month from organic content is a realistic outcomeâif your posts are consistent, strategic, and call your audience to action.
Unless your account is already warmâmeaning youâve built community trust, shown up regularly, and created real relationshipsâorganic social alone wonât cut it.
Letâs be honest.
Iâve worked with clients (and been that business myself) who post consistentlyâ5, 6, even 7 times a weekâwith clear messaging and high-quality contentâŚ
And still? No leads.
So when people say, âJust post 3â5 times a week and youâll start getting clients,â â thatâs only half the truth.
Hereâs the fuller picture:
To turn social media into a reliable lead engine, most small brands need:
2â3 pieces of content a day, not just a few times a week
A mix of video, Reels, Stories, carousels, and engagement-building content
Time spent commenting, responding to DMs, collaborating, and showing up in your communityâs space
Clear calls-to-action, consistent offers, and a way to move people off-platform (like to your email list or a booking page)
đ Thatâs not a part-time commitment. For many, thatâs 10â15 hours a week, minimum.
And even then, it takes weeks or months to gain tractionâespecially if you're not already sitting on a warm, engaged audience.
So yesâorganic social can work.
But if:
Youâre posting 3â5 times a week
Youâre not getting traction
You feel like you're shouting into the voidâŚ
Youâre not doing it wrong.
You're just seeing how the current algorithms and attention economy actually work.
Thatâs why I always say:
Social is just one tool in your visibility toolkitânot the whole strategy.
If putting in 5â15 hours a week on organic social sounds draining or misalignedâyouâre not doing it wrong.
There are other (and often better) ways to attract leads and build trust. Here are three of the best:
1. Email Funnel + Freebie
Build your list with a clear opt-in (checklist, training, quiz), and stay in regular contact.
â
People chose to hear from you
â
Lower content volume, higher trust
One client launched a new freebie opt-in and, after sharing it in two aligned posts, got a handful of inquiriesâincluding several from people ready to invest.
It wasnât viral or flashyâbut it was effective, because it met her audience right where they were.
Will every freebie perform like that? No. But when your message is clear and your offer solves a real need, small actions can lead to big momentum.
2. Referrals + Partnerships
People trust people.
One aligned collaborator can send 10 leads your way with a single email or intro.
Your referral circle may be more powerful than your feed.
3. Borrowed Visibility
Guest teaching. Podcast interviews. Panel spots. Summits.
These allow you to show up as an expert in front of warm, engaged audiencesâwithout building a whole ecosystem from scratch.
4. SEO (The Smart Kind)
Search is still one of the best long-term visibility channelsâespecially with the rise of AI search tools.

Yesâbut reframe the goal.
Social media might not be your best lead source, but it still matters.
Think of it like your digital shop window. Even if folks find you through SEO, email, or referrals⌠theyâll often check your socials to see if youâre the real deal.
Use it to:
Show your values + build trust
Prove you're active and consistent
Support the reach of other strategies (like blogs, SEO, guest features)
And if youâre stretched thin? Put it in âmaintain mode.â
One or two aligned posts a week. No pressure. Just presence.
Social media isnât broken. But itâs not magic either.
If your nervous system is maxed and your time is limited, go where trust builds faster:
Build your list
Nurture your referral web
Share your brilliance with borrowed audiences
If you like social, great. Use it to glow, not grind.
If you donât? You still have options.
